WASHINGTON, DC – An American Airlines plane and a US Army helicopter crashed into each other in mid-air near Reagan Washington National Airport on Wednesday night. The accident happened around 9 pm as the plane was coming in to land.
The plane, American Eagle Flight 5342, had 60 passengers and 4 crew members on board. It was flying from Wichita, Kansas, to Washington, DC. The helicopter, a Black Hawk, had three soldiers and had taken off from Fort Belvoir, Virginia.
After the crash, the plane fell into the Potomac River and broke into two pieces. The helicopter was found upside down in the water. Rescue teams, including police divers and fireboats, are searching for survivors. The cold and dark conditions are making the rescue work difficult.
US President Donald Trump has been informed about the accident. He thanked the emergency teams for their hard work. Senator Ted Cruz said there were some deaths but did not share more details.
