ISLAMABAD: The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet convened today to review a summary presented by the Petroleum Division, proposing an increase in the indigenous gas tariff for the industrial sector (captive power) and non-protected domestic categories.

Chaired by Federal Minister for Finance Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, the meeting included Federal Minister for Petroleum Mr. Musadik Masood Malik, Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari, Minister of State for Finance and Revenue Mr. Ali Parvez Malik, Chairman OGRA, Chairman SECP, Federal Secretaries, and senior officials from relevant divisions.

Following detailed discussions, the ECC agreed to raise the gas tariff for captive power plants from Rs 3,000 per mmbtu to Rs 3,500 per mmbtu to address the revenue needs of the gas sector for FY 2024-25.

However, the committee opted against hiking tariffs for domestic consumers to avoid placing extra financial pressure on them. Furthermore, the ECC instructed the Petroleum Division to take steps to impose a grid transition levy on captive power plants, aiming to boost the efficiency of the energy sector.
