ISLAMABAD: Despite PTA offering companies the opportunity to register their VPNs 10 days ago, no company has registered its VPN so far.
According to PTA sources, the registration process for VPNs started on December 19, but no applications have been received yet. It is expected that applications for registration may be submitted in the next two to four weeks.
The license will allow VPN service providers to register locally, and they will also be required to establish data centers in Pakistan. PTA will charge companies a license fee ranging from Rs. 200,000 to Rs. 400,000 for registration.
Officials say the registration process will place VPN providers under regulatory oversight. Providers will need to use locally registered data centers and follow Pakistan’s data protection laws.

The Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA) supported this initiative, saying it will help streamline operations. Under this framework, the PTA will monitor VPN services and gain access to user data and browsing history to enhance security measures.
The process is part of ongoing consultations with stakeholders to ensure compliance with local regulations.
