Wellington: The New Zealand government has announced that it will ban Chinese-owned social media app TikTok on devices with access to the parliamentary network.
The move comes amidst growing concerns over the risks of using the app, particularly relating to the potential compromise of sensitive government information. Parliamentary Service chief executive Rafael Gonzalez-Montero said the ban would begin on March 31, adding: “Special arrangements can be made for those who require the app to do their jobs”.
The UK has already implemented an immediate ban on the app’s use on government phones, while US government agencies have been told to remove it from official devices by the end of March.
