LAHORE: Maryam Nawaz, Senior Vice President of the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N), was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Punjab shortly after being elected as the chief executive of the province.

On Monday, the Punjab Assembly elected Maryam, a PML-N leader, as the chief minister despite a boycott by members of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC).

Maryam’s victory marked a historic moment as she became Pakistan’s first-ever female chief minister, securing 220 votes in the election.

Her opponent, Rana Aftab Aftab Ahmad of the SIC, received no votes as the party chose to boycott the elections after being denied speaking rights.

“The votes have been tallied, with Maryam securing 220 votes and SIC candidate Rana Aftab Aftab receiving zero,” announced Speaker Malik Ahmad Khan.

Following the announcement, the speaker invited Maryam Nawaz to assume the position of the leader of the House. She commenced her address with a recitation and extended congratulations to the newly-elected speaker and deputy speaker.

Expressing her desire for opposition participation in the democratic process, Maryam noted the SIC’s absence during the polls and thanked her party members for their unwavering support.
