SAN FRANCISCO: Microsoft has announced its latest move towards the integration of language-based artificial intelligence (AI) into its iconic programs like Excel, Word, and Outlook.

The tech giant is adopting generative AI capabilities through its latest chatbot, Copilot, which can quickly produce meeting transcripts, calendar entries, and PowerPoint slides. Unlike other tech giants, Microsoft’s generative AI technology will function as an assistant for users of its popular workplace software.

Microsoft’s integration of ChatGPT technology into its programs highlights the company’s rapid adoption of language-based AI despite initial issues. OpenAI, the firm behind ChatGPT, has recently released its latest version, GPT-4, which Microsoft is using as the basis for its Bing search engine chatbot.

Other tech giants like Google and Meta are approaching generative AI with caution, with Google offering testers ways to “infuse generative AI” into apps and Meta developing a product group to “turbocharge” their AI work. However, Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella, says that the company is moving from “autopilot to copilot” with the next generation of AI, implying that the technology will be used as an assistant rather than taking over office tasks.

Microsoft’s integration of ChatGPT technology into its programs is made possible by its massive investment in OpenAI, the company that is building the technology behind ChatGPT. OpenAI’s latest version of GPT-4, which can be prompted by both images and text, is already the foundation of a chatbot on Microsoft’s Bing search engine that is gaining more users thanks to the embrace of AI.

The announcement of Microsoft’s new chatbot, Copilot, is seen as a game-changer in the workplace, with its ChatGPT-like abilities promising to enhance efficiency significantly. Rather than taking over office tasks, generative AI will function as an assistant for users of Microsoft’s popular workplace software. The company’s investment in OpenAI is proof of its commitment to the development of generative AI technology.
