ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif emphasized on Saturday that the nation possessed the capability to amass revenues exceeding Rs 24 trillion, surpassing the annual tax goal of Rs 9.4 trillion.
He lamented that approximately three times the annual revenue target was being lost due to corruption, inefficiency, and negligence.
This substantial amount, he highlighted, could be allocated towards debt repayment, as well as the construction of hospitals, schools, universities, and roads across the country.
Speaking at an event to honor diligent and honest officers of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), the prime minister stressed the imperative of distinguishing between merit and misconduct, underscoring the necessity for fair rewards and penalties.
He underscored that national progress hinged on strict adherence to discipline among government officials.
Pointing out challenges including a low tax to GDP ratio and escalating external and internal debts, the prime minister noted a new law to recover approximately Rs 2.7 trillion held up in various appellate forums.
He outlined provisions for appointing ATIR members through open competition and granting them perks equivalent to senior judges. Additionally, he directed efforts to recover Rs 756 billion from a recent sales tax scam.
Proudly acknowledging the honest and hardworking officers of the FBR, the prime minister emphasized the collective responsibility of politicians, bureaucrats, and organizational leaders in driving the nation’s development.
He affirmed that future recognition and acknowledgment would be solely based on honesty, efficiency, hard work, and dedication to national welfare.
Discussing the significance of the track and trace system, the prime minister condemned its misuse, vowing to steer the country towards prosperity and development with fairness and determination, aiming to surpass India in progress.
Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb underscored the pivotal role of revenue collection in socio-economic development, urging efficient execution of policies to expand the tax base and revitalize the national economy. Chairman FBR Amjad Zubair Tiwana expressed gratitude to the prime minister for recognizing the hard work of FBR officers.
