LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz instructed authorities on Saturday to implement precautionary measures in anticipation of heavy rainfall expected across the province.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) had previously issued a warning on April 22 about an upcoming spell of rain in Punjab until April 29.
According to the forecast by the Met Office, several cities, including Lahore, are likely to experience moderate to heavy rainfall from April 26 to 29.
The PMD had outlined the areas expected to be affected, mentioning the possibility of rain, wind, thunderstorms, and hailstorms in various regions.
Maryam emphasized the importance of preparedness and instructed commissioners, deputy commissioners, and the managing director of the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) to ensure proactive measures for rainwater drainage. She urged officials to be on the ground at all times and utilize available resources effectively.
Furthermore, Maryam emphasized the need to maintain smooth traffic flow in Lahore and other cities, directing traffic wardens to be active in assisting citizens.
Safety measures for residents of low-lying areas were also highlighted, with a focus on timely evacuation to secure locations. Maryam stressed the importance of early warning systems using various communication channels, including media and social media platforms.
Additionally, Maryam underscored the importance of safeguarding livestock in rural areas. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) had also instructed relevant authorities to prepare for nationwide torrential rains and thunderstorms until April 29.
