ISLAMABAD: Punjab’s Chief Minister, Maryam Nawaz, has ordered the commencement of a significant operation against electricity theft, smuggling, and hoarding.
During a session of the Energy Department on Saturday, she emphasized the need for a strict stance against these unlawful activities. Maryam Nawaz instructed relevant authorities to launch a comprehensive operation throughout the province to tackle electricity theft, smuggling, and hoarding, aligning with a policy discussed during a recent meeting chaired by the Prime Minister.
The Chief Minister stressed the importance of setting specific targets and submitting a compliance report. She emphasized the inspection of all types of connections, including industrial, commercial, and residential, with authorities being held accountable for any lapses. Maryam Nawaz underscored the necessity for stringent legislation to deter and penalize offenders involved in electricity-related crimes.
She highlighted that electricity theft is a punishable offense and called for prompt arrests and penalties. Furthermore, she emphasized the importance of holding accountable any government officials involved in such illegal activities. Maryam directed the establishment of a task force comprising experts and government representatives to formulate an effective strategy against these crimes.
The task force’s responsibilities would include monitoring the Ministry of Power, evaluating the performance of electricity distribution companies, and overseeing the anti-theft operations.
During the meeting, it was disclosed that Punjab loses approximately Rs100 billion annually due to electricity theft. Maryam Nawaz reiterated her commitment to a zero-tolerance policy on electricity theft, emphasizing that the funds recovered from curbing these activities would be redirected towards improving healthcare, education, and overall development in the region.
