KARACHI: Former cricketing great Shahid Khan Afridi responded on Sunday to Babar Azam’s appointment as the Pakistan national cricket team’s white-ball captain.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Afridi expressed his surprise at the choice made by the seasoned cricketers in the selection committee.
He threw his support behind Pakistan’s wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan, asserting, “I maintain that if a change was warranted, Rizwan would have been the ideal candidate!”
“Nevertheless, now that the decision has been made, I extend my complete support and best wishes to Team Pakistan and Babar Azam.”

Azam Siddique, Babar Azam’s father, urged the white-ball captain on Sunday to show respect to senior players Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim.
Posting on Instagram, Siddique remarked, “There are speculations about lack of unity in the team under Babar Azam’s leadership. I have advised Babar Azam to let go of past grievances.”
“I have also advised Babar to regard everyone in the team as brothers. For it’s through unity that brothers conquer the world,” he added.
