KARACHI: Consumers of electricity will now see an additional charge of Rs2.75 per unit following the approval from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) to increase tariffs for the ongoing quarter of fiscal year 2023-24.
This increase, totaling Rs85.2 billion for the second quarter of FY2023-24, will uniformly affect consumers with a Rs2.75 per unit rise.
Effective March 30, 2024, the two quarterly adjustments of Rs4.43 per unit will no longer apply, as stated by the power regulatory authority on Thursday.
Nepra has decided to implement the second quarterly adjustment from April 2024 onwards, after the expiration of the current adjustments.
The additional charge will be reflected in the electricity bills of April, May, and June for consumers of “XWDISCOs and K-Electric,” excluding lifeline consumers.
Nepra has submitted its decision on the tariff increase to the federal government, pending final approval and notification.
Previously in January, Nepra had approved a hike of Rs4.12 per unit in electricity prices due to “monthly fuel adjustment” for all consumers, except for lifeline and K-Electric customers, as reported by The News.
Before the January increase, Nepra had sanctioned a Rs2.87 per unit hike for K-Electric consumers just two days prior to raising tariffs for other DISCOs’ consumers.
