ISLAMABAD: The government has reduced electricity prices under fuel adjustment and other charges. The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has issued an official notification in this regard.

According to NEPRA’s notification, electricity prices have been cut by a total of Rs1.83 per unit. This reduction includes both monthly and quarterly adjustments.

The notification states that electricity has become cheaper by 28 paisas per unit under the monthly fuel adjustment, which will be applicable for the current month. In addition, a reduction of Rs1.55 per unit has been approved under the quarterly adjustment, which will be effective for three months – May, June, and July 2025.

On the other hand, there is a possibility that the basic electricity tariff across the country may also be reduced for the next financial year. Sources say that the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted a request to NEPRA for a reduction in power purchase rates. NEPRA is expected to hold a hearing on this request on May 15.

According to sources, electricity consumers may get relief worth Rs140 billion to Rs400 billion in the upcoming financial year. In a recent statement, the Prime Minister said that a free market will be established for electricity production, which will help reduce prices further and provide major relief to the public. These steps have raised hopes for more reductions in electricity rates in the future.
