PESHAWAR: Ali Amin Gandapur, a PTI leader with the backing of the Sunni Ittehad Council, has clinched the position of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister by securing 90 votes from members of the newly formed provincial assembly.
His rival, Dr. Abdullah of the PML-N, managed to gather only 16 votes in the electoral contest.
The session has been adjourned until Saturday.
In an earlier development, Babar Saleem Swati, a candidate from the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), was elected as the speaker of the KP Assembly with 89 votes out of 106, while his opponent received 17 votes. Swati was subsequently sworn in as the speaker.
Members of the Sunni Ittehad Council extended their congratulations to the newly elected speaker of the provincial assembly. Suriya Bibi was elected as the deputy speaker of the KP Assembly and also took the oath.
The KP Assembly session stands adjourned until Friday at 10 am. Speaker Saleem Swati announced that the assembly would conduct the chief ministerial elections on Friday.
During the proceedings, PML-N’s Sobia Shahid displayed a shoe in the House and raised concerns about the chanting from the treasury benches directed towards her.
A commotion arose when PML-N MP Sobia Shahid arrived at the polling booth to cast her vote.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly session commenced under the chairmanship of assembly speaker Mushtaq Ghani to elect the speaker and the deputy speaker.
