ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) received significant relief from the top court on Friday, as three of its candidates, including the imprisoned party president Parvez Elahi, were granted permission to participate in the upcoming February 8 elections.

On Friday, the Supreme Court approved the appeals of PTI candidates Umer Aslam, Major (retd) Tahir Sadiq, and Elahi, challenging the returning officer’s decisions to reject their nomination papers from various constituencies.

Elahi has been given the green light to contest the general election from the PP-32 constituency in the Gujarat district.

The former Punjab chief minister had approached the Supreme Court to contest the upcoming general elections, challenging the Lahore High Court’s (LHC) verdict, which upheld the Election Tribunal’s decision to reject his nomination papers.

Presently confined in Adiala Jail, the PTI president filed a petition in the apex court under Article 185(3) of the Constitution for leave to appeal against the judgment dated January 13, 2024, passed by the LHC in his petition.

Elahi’s nomination papers had been rejected from the National Assembly constituency NA-64 (Gujrat-III) and the Punjab Assembly’s constituency PP-34 (Gujrat-VIII).
