ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly Standing Committee on Human Rights called on the government to take action against a civil judge whose wife is accused of torturing an underage maid.

The committee, led by MNA Dr. Mehreen Razzaq Bhutto, expressed deep concerns over the incident and demanded that the Ministry of Law and Justice initiate the process to terminate the service of the civil judge.

During the committee meeting, the Chairperson of the National Commission on the Rights of Child (NCRC) briefed the members about the case. Initially, the first information report (FIR) lacked strength, but after considering the medico-legal report, additional sections were added to reinforce the case.

An officer from the ICT police corroborated the statements provided by the NCRC chairperson. The committee pointed out that the incident was a blatant violation of human rights and emphasized the need to hold the responsible individuals accountable, seeking maximum punishment in accordance with the relevant Articles of the Constitution, including No 3, 11, 23, 25-A, 35, and 37(a).

The committee urged the Ministry of Law and Justice to act in accordance with the Judicial Code of Conduct and take punitive actions against the civil judge. They also requested the ministry to submit a report on the matter.

In addition, the committee directed the police to conduct an impartial inquiry, finalize the report, and submit it to the committee at the earliest.

Furthermore, the committee called on the Ministry of Human Rights to review and provide input on the draft policy prepared by the Child Rights Commission, with a commitment to submit the document in the next meeting scheduled for August 7.

The committee expressed displeasure over the absence of the Secretary of the Ministry of Law and Justice from the meeting and regarded such a non-serious and unprofessional attitude as a breach of the committee’s privileges and parliamentary norms.
