KARACHI: The Sindh government has announced the cancellation of all examinations starting from Wednesday, 14th June, in light of the imminent danger presented by the Very Severe Cyclonic System (VSCS) Biparjoy.

The cyclone is anticipated to make landfall between Karachi and India’s Gujarat on Thursday, prompting authorities to prioritize the safety of students and citizens alike.

The announcement came through a notification issued by Assistant Commissioner Abid Qamar Shaikh of Karachi, who emphasized the need to prevent any potential loss of life or inconvenience to the public. Consequently, all examinations, education seminars, summer camps, and related activities have been advised to be cancelled or rescheduled from the 14th of June 2023 until the storm has dissipated.

The notification highlights the expected impact of the cyclone, emphasizing that the coastal areas of Karachi Division are at significant risk. Torrential rains and storms are predicted to lash the city, creating hazardous conditions. As a result, it has become imperative to take preemptive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of the populace.

The latest advisory from the Pakistan Meteorologist Department (PMD) reveals that the cyclone has been steadily progressing north-northwestward over the past six hours. Currently, Biparjoy is located approximately 410km south of Karachi and 400km south of Thatta, with its coordinates estimated to be near Latitude 21.2°N and Longitude 66.6°E.

The Met Office further elaborates on the cyclonic system’s intensity, indicating maximum sustained surface winds of 150-160kmph, accompanied by gusts of up to 180kmph in the vicinity of the system center. Additionally, sea conditions are described as phenomenal around the center, with a maximum wave height of 30 feet.

As the Sindh province prepares for the looming threat of Cyclone Biparjoy, the cancellation of exams underscores the authorities’ commitment to safeguarding the welfare of students and the public. With the cyclone’s landfall anticipated in the coming days, the focus remains on implementing necessary precautions and ensuring the security of all individuals in the affected areas.
