KARACHI: Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon announced that the provincial government is working to unify ride-hailing services in Karachi into a single system, as stated by his spokesperson in a press release.

“We are aiming to organize Karachi’s online taxi system into one integrated and modern setup,” Memon said during a transport department meeting.

He explained that combining these services will ensure passengers have access to safe, standard, and legal transport options.

Husain Mansoor, Memon’s spokesperson, told Private Media that services like Careem and Yango will be included in this unified system.

The press release noted that Qasim Naveed Qamar, Special Assistant to the Sindh Chief Minister on Investment and Public-Private Partnership, Transport Secretary Asad Zamin, and Sindh Mass Transit Authority Managing Director Kamal Dayo also attended the meeting.

Memon emphasized that providing safe, high-quality, and eco-friendly transport for Karachi residents is a key goal.

He also mentioned plans to introduce an electric vehicle (EV) taxi service in Karachi, stating, “An EV taxi service will improve the city’s taxi system and help reduce pollution.”

The meeting discussed options for offering EV taxis to the public through affordable payment plans, according to the press release.

Regarding a previous announcement about free pink scooters for women, Memon said progress is being made to improve transport access for women.

He added that double-decker buses for Karachi’s transport system are expected to arrive by June, with a large batch of new buses anticipated in late June or early July.

Memon also said that the upcoming financial year’s budget will focus on allocating funds to purchase more buses for commuters.
