Lahore: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif chaired a special meeting where new development projects under the Local Government and Community Development Department were discussed in detail. The meeting gave initial approval for a series of repair and improvement projects in major cities and rural areas across the province.
In the first phase, 59 major cities will see the construction of modern sewerage and drainage systems. Rainwater storage tanks will also be built to manage water drainage during heavy rains. To reduce electricity costs, water supply tube wells will be shifted to solar energy.
The projects also include repair of streets and installation of tough tiles in urban areas. New parks will be developed in selected cities, where, on the Chief Minister’s instructions, swings and other play equipment for children will be added.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz also directed that rural areas should get equal attention. New drainage systems will be built, and streets will be repaired and paved with tiles. Boundary walls and proper cleaning systems will be set up for central graveyards in every village. Parks, playgrounds, village name boards, and house numbering will also be part of the rural projects.

A special program for cleaning dirty ponds in villages using biotechnology will also begin. Special plants will be placed in the ponds to help remove bad smell and pollution. These plants naturally absorb waste and help clean the environment.
The meeting also reviewed the Rural Roads Rehabilitation Program, with a plan to rebuild and repair 4,500 kilometers of village roads. Detailed briefing was also given on a program to build Union Council offices, which will include meeting halls, council rooms, and offices for secretaries.
At the end of the meeting, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz said that the “Suthra Punjab” (Clean Punjab) program – the biggest cleanliness drive in the province’s history – is moving ahead successfully. She urged citizens to take part in keeping their cities and villages clean.
