ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad Development Working Party (IDWP) has approved land acquisition and the hiring of consultants for designing a Special Protection Unit (SPU) building in the federal capital.

The meeting, chaired by Islamabad Chief Commissioner Mohammad Ali Randhawa, also approved a project to upgrade the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) and establish canine centres in the city.

Eight police stations will also get new buildings. These include Khanna, Kirpa, Shams Colony, Loi Bher, Humak, Nilore, Phulgran, and Sangjani. Many of these stations currently operate from greenbelts or rented spaces.

Officials said the SPU building will be constructed in H-11 behind Police Lines Headquarters. It will include an armoury, barracks, offices, and training centres. The SPU, which is being revamped on the orders of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, aims to ensure the security of Chinese nationals in Islamabad.

The CTD complex will be built in H-16. It will include barracks, offices, a CTD police station, a training centre, and investigation facilities. The revamp is planned to follow the Punjab CTD model.

For canine units, land has been allocated in Tarlai. The facility will include kennels, training grounds, and accommodations for staff and veterinarians.

The meeting also approved road improvement projects for Islamabad’s rural areas. The chief commissioner instructed that all projects undergo third-party validation before payments are made.
