PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) government has declared a public holiday across the province on the first day of the Islamic New Year, i.e., 1st Muharram-ul-Haram 1446 Hijri.
The Provincial Administration Department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has issued a notification declaring the 1st of Muharram as a public holiday in the province, contingent upon the sighting of the moon.
During this public holiday, offices of all provincial government and private companies, as well as educational institutions, will remain closed.
A meeting of the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee has been scheduled for July 6, 2024 to mark the beginning of the new Islamic year.
Chairman Ruet Hilal Committee Maulana Muhammad Abdul Khabir Azad will preside over the meeting.
Similarly, meetings of zonal committees will convene at their respective headquarters to determine the sighting of the moon. The chairman of the sighting committee will officially announce the commencement of the new Islamic year.
Upon the commencement of the new Islamic year and month, gatherings and processions will be organized nationwide to commemorate the martyrs of Karbala.
Both federal and provincial governments have implemented special security measures to maintain law and order during this period.
