Islamabad: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has announced a Rs7.55 per unit increase in electricity prices, adding to the financial strain on households. This comes just ahead of the holy month of Ramazan, a time when expenses traditionally rise for Pakistani citizens.
The increase, attributed to rising fuel costs, is estimated to place an additional burden of Rs66 billion on consumers. While the hike applies to the current billing month, it excludes lifeline consumers and those served by K-Electric.
NEPRA’s notification clarifies that this is a one-month adjustment based on fuel costs incurred in January 2024. During that month, the most expensive electricity generation methods involved diesel and furnace oil, with costs reaching Rs45.60 and Rs35.43 per unit, respectively.
This latest development comes as a significant blow to Pakistani consumers already grappling with high inflation. While the government maintains the increase is necessary to cover fuel expenses, it is likely to further exacerbate financial difficulties for households and businesses alike, particularly during the upcoming Ramazan when expenditures typically increase.
