ISLAMABAD: Punjab’s Interim Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi secured the position of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman unopposed for the next three years, as reported by a private TV channel on Tuesday.
The announcement was made during a press conference by PCB’s Chief Election Commissioner Shah Khawar, who stated that Naqvi would assume his role as chairman shortly.
Naqvi takes over as the 37th chairman of the cricket board, succeeding Zaka Ashraf in the Board of Governors (BoG) of the PCB Management Committee.
Khawar clarified that Naqvi can simultaneously hold the positions of chairman and chief minister without any legal constraints.
He expressed confidence in the newly formed board’s ability to make positive decisions and advancements in upcoming cricketing events.
Naqvi, also a media channel owner, had been nominated by caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar to join the PCB’s BoG.
“I am committed to addressing the challenges confronting Pakistan cricket. Reforming the sport is imperative,” Naqvi remarked.
In January, Ashraf resigned from his position as chairman of the PCB Management Committee during a committee meeting, citing difficulties in effecting positive changes.
During Ashraf’s tenure, Pakistan participated in significant tournaments such as the Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup, though they fell short of reaching the final in the former and the semi-finals in the latter.
