KARACHI: Formerly associated with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), senior politicians Raza Haroon and Anees Advocate, alongside their allies, officially joined the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) on Friday, further intensifying election activities ahead of the February 8 general elections.

Their decision to align with the PPP followed a meeting between the pair and former president and co-chairman of the PPP, Asif Ali Zardari, in Karachi.

Haroon, a former provincial minister, had previously joined Mustafa Kamal’s Pak Sarzameen Party (PSP) in 2016 before eventually departing from that faction. Similarly, Anees, an MQM dissenter, had also joined PSP in 2016.

A statement released by the PPP affirmed Zardari’s warm reception of Haroon and Anees, both of whom were previously part of MQM’s Rabita Committee, into the party.

During the meeting, the politicians deliberated on the “charter of Karachi,” emphasizing the city’s development, the establishment of peace and security, and fostering a harmonious environment in the port city.

Zardari, commenting on the occasion, highlighted the profound impact of the PPP’s Charter of Karachi on the city’s future, underscoring the party’s commitment as the representative of Karachi’s populace. He expressed their dedication to reinstating the elements of progress that had been jeopardized by those against peace and proponents of animosity.

The former president also referenced PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s 10-point election agenda, asserting that once in power, the PPP would introduce similar development initiatives not only for Karachi but also for all cities and towns across Pakistan. These initiatives aim to alleviate the burden on the common citizens amidst the prevailing inflation.

With the national-level polls slated for February, the PPP initiated its election campaign, aligning with Bilawal’s comprehensive 10-point agenda, unveiled on December 27.
