Rana Sanaullah Affirms: 2023 Not Designated as Election Year
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah has disclosed that discussions are underway regarding the selection of a Caretaker Prime Minister, with Hafeez Sheikh among the considered candidates. However, no definitive decision has been reached, as the current year, 2023, does not mark an election year.

During an interview with a private TV channel, Rana Sanaullah highlighted that the constitution stipulates that no subsequent election should take place following the census conducted in 2017. The process of delineating constituencies usually spans around 120 days, a relatively brief timeframe.

Emphasizing the non-postponement of the impending election, the Interior Minister affirmed the commitment of the caretaker government to ensure the timely conduct of the election. While deliberations persist regarding the potential candidacy of Hafeez Sheikh for the caretaker prime minister position, no final selection has been confirmed. An official announcement regarding the caretaker prime minister’s identity is anticipated either later today or tomorrow, marking the resolution of the matter.

Rana Sanaullah articulated that the policy of refraining from negotiations with terrorists is not a recent development, but a longstanding stance. Previous attempts at negotiation with terrorists failed to yield positive outcomes. He noted the prevailing law and order challenges in a particular province, underscoring the need for heightened attention to address these concerns.

Reflecting on recent events, Rana Sanaullah referenced an explosion that occurred during a JUI rally several days ago, resulting in significant damage. He clarified that such incidents may occur, but they will not hinder the progression of the election process.

Addressing the statement made by the Army Chief, the Interior Minister deemed it an appropriate response given the prevailing circumstances. He expressed the collective support of the nation for the stance taken by the Army Chief, stressing that the actions of certain individuals are unacceptable. Rana Sanaullah emphasized the ongoing efforts of the army in combating terrorism through daily operations and sacrifices, unequivocally stating that terrorism will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Responding to a query about whether 2023 marks an election year, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah provided an affirmative response, albeit with some ambiguity.
