ISLAMABAD: After a hiatus of seventeen years since the notification of the previous curriculum in 2006, the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Education Government of Pakistan has recently issued a significant notification approving the National Curriculum of Pakistan.

Curriculum Development through Collaboration:

The comprehensive task of curriculum development for grades 9 to 12 was undertaken through an inclusive approach. The new syllabus, encompassing classes 9, 10, 11, and 12, will be introduced gradually, with classes 9 and 11 adopting the new curriculum in 2024, followed by classes 10 and 12 in 2025.

Engaging Stakeholders for Inclusive Feedback:

Ensuring a collaborative effort, relevant stakeholders were actively engaged throughout the curriculum development process. Policymakers, academics, practitioners, parents, and students from all corners of Pakistan were included in an intensive consultation exercise. To facilitate inclusive feedback collection, policy dialogues were conducted across the country, accompanied by numerous curriculum workshops. These workshops proved instrumental in gathering valuable insights from the concerned stakeholders. Additionally, a user-friendly online portal was made available for individuals to submit their feedback conveniently.

Expert Approval of Nine Subject Areas:

After conducting regional curriculum workshops in each province, a final curriculum workshop convened at the NCC Secretariat in Islamabad. The workshop witnessed the participation of nominated experts from all provinces, including Azad Jammu & Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan. The curriculum for nine subjects, namely Urdu, English, Islamiat, Pakistan Studies, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Computer Science, was meticulously reviewed and ultimately approved by the experts.

Implementation Strategy and Stakeholder Meetings:

To ensure effective implementation, multiple stakeholder meetings were organized, allowing for detailed deliberations on the curriculum. As a result, the curriculum has been officially notified for Islamabad Capital Territory and institutions operating under the Federal Ministries. Simultaneously, an implementation plan has been issued to support the seamless integration of the new curriculum. Provinces are expected to review and notify the curriculum in accordance with their respective Acts and laws.

A Milestone for Education in Pakistan:

This groundbreaking development marks a significant milestone in Pakistan’s education sector, paving the way for an updated and inclusive curriculum that caters to the evolving needs of students nationwide. The new curriculum is anticipated to foster a dynamic learning environment and equip students with the skills necessary to excel in the modern world.
