KARACHI: Former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi characterized the general elections, which took place on February 8 this year, as a “failed” and “unusual” event.
Addressing media representatives in Karachi today, Abbasi remarked: “These elections were exceptional to the extent that even Google seems uncertain about the victors. Nonetheless, those possessing Form 47 emerged victorious in this electoral contest.”
When questioned about potential contact from Nawaz Sharif, the politician noted that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) was reaching out to independent candidates who secured victory in the polls.
Abbasi, who abstained from participating in the February 8 polls, made a notable decision following his resignation from the party office subsequent to Maryam Nawaz’s appointment as senior vice president and chief organizer in 2022.
Reflecting on the post-election scenario, Abbasi stressed his consistent advocacy for timely polls and emphasized the necessity of consultations to chart a clear path forward, asserting that elections without a consensus on direction breed disorder in the nation.
“This has been vindicated now. The elections yielded no resolution to the problems at hand, and continuing on this course will not provide any solutions. Political leadership must transcend the ‘politics of waiting’ and work towards resolving the country’s issues,” he added.
“The nation’s interests should supersede personal ambitions. Without cooperation among political parties, no government can thrive.”
In terms of government formation, Abbasi underscored that the party willing to make the most compromises is likely to assume power.
Regarding the refusal of parties to form a government at the center, Abbasi remarked that this was a unique occurrence, as none of the parties deemed themselves suitable to government.
