LAHORE: The Lahore city traffic police have introduced a new service at the Allama Iqbal International Airport, making it the first airport in Pakistan to issue international driving licences. This facility aims to provide travellers with a quick solution before they depart abroad.

The decision to set up this kiosk was made after several meetings led by Lahore’s Chief Traffic Officer, DIG Athar Waheed. Many travellers had asked for this service to avoid the trouble of going to different traffic police centres in the city.

The kiosk is staffed by trained personnel who can initiate the process within minutes for those already holding a local driving licence. It was inaugurated by CTO Athar Waheed on Monday.

According to Mr Waheed, the Pakistani International Driving Licence (IDL) is recognized in 132 countries. This licence allows Pakistani citizens to legally drive in these countries without needing additional permits, thus facilitating travel for those with a valid Pakistani driving licence and an IDL.

He further explained that the IDL is recognized under several UN Conventions on Road Traffic (1926, 1949, and 1968). Countries where the Pakistani IDL is valid include Japan, South Korea, India, Indonesia, Malaysia (in Asia), the UK, Italy, Sweden, Spain, the Russian Federation, and various African countries like Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Egypt, as well as the USA, Canada, Argentina, Mexico, Colombia, Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and others.

This kiosk is part of new changes started by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to modernize and digitize the system. The goal is to make it easier for people to get driving licences. The kiosk will stay open 24 hours a day in three shifts and will use modern technology to provide fast service.

CTO Athar Waheed emphasized that the centre will continually update its services to meet future demands and will consider expanding this facility to other international airports based on feedback from citizens.
