Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) star Lionel Messi has apologized to the club and his teammates after being suspended for going on an unauthorized trip to Saudi Arabia.
Messi missed practice on Monday while he was on a promotional trip, resulting in the French club suspending the World Cup winner. He posted a short video on Instagram, explaining that he thought the team had Monday off and asking for forgiveness from his teammates and the club.
Coach Christophe Galtier has said that PSG and Messi will wait until the end of his suspension to discuss how he finishes the season. Messi is not expected to extend his contract with the club, and there are only five games remaining. Galtier declined to say if he endorsed the decision to suspend Messi and whether the player would return to the field after the suspension.
The club has not confirmed the length of Messi’s suspension, but French media reports suggest it will be two weeks, causing him to miss two games. PSG has a five-point lead over second-placed Marseille in Ligue 1.
Messi joined PSG in 2021 after leaving Barcelona, where he won every major honor. PSG and its fans were hoping Messi’s arrival would result in a Champions League title, but the team was eliminated in the round of 16 in consecutive seasons.
Possible Future for Messi and Neymar:
Reports have linked Messi to Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, a return to Barcelona, and a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia. Some PSG fans are also urging forward Neymar to leave the club. However, Galtier criticized fans’ recent protest outside Neymar’s residence, saying that “private life must remain private” and that going to private homes is “out of control and dangerous.”
