ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Power Division has launched a new mobile application called the Power Smart App under the “Apna Meter, Apni Reading” initiative, allowing electricity consumers to record and upload their own meter readings.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif officially launched the app on Sunday. According to a spokesperson from the Power Division, the move is aimed at improving transparency in electricity billing and reducing common complaints such as overbilling and inaccurate readings.
Through the app, consumers can take a photo of their electricity meter on a specific date and upload it. The image will be used to generate their monthly bill. Officials say this reform empowers consumers by making them active participants in the billing process.
“This is not just a tech upgrade—it’s a major governance reform,” said an official. “It gives people control over their electricity bills and protects them from errors and exploitation.”
One of the main benefits of the app is that it helps protect users who get electricity subsidies. For example, people who use up to 200 units of electricity each month pay around Rs2,330 under the government’s support program. But if they use even a little more, the subsidy is removed, and the bill can shoot up to over Rs8,000. By sending their meter reading on time through the app, users can make sure they don’t lose this subsidy because of delays or wrong readings.

Another useful feature is that if a user uploads their reading on the set date, only that reading will be accepted. Any reading sent after that won’t be counted, which helps stop delays or changes in the reading later.
Officials say the app will improve transparency and reduce interference from meter readers, while also cutting down the number of billing-related complaints. The app was developed under the leadership of Federal Minister for Energy Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari, with the efforts of Secretary Power Division Dr Fakhar Alam and his team.
