ISLAMABAD – Chairman of the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), Lt Gen (Retd) Sajjad Ghani, has resigned from his position due to personal reasons.
According to TV reports, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has appreciated Lt Gen (Retd) Ghani’s services and sent his resignation to the Cabinet Division for formal approval.
The Prime Minister praised Ghani’s leadership in effectively managing WAPDA and overseeing key energy projects. He also extended his best wishes to the outgoing chairman.
According to previous reports, Lt Gen (Retd) Sajjad Ghani took charge as WAPDA chairman in August 2022 and became the 23rd person to hold the post. He is a professional engineer and has had a distinguished dual career in engineering and the military for over 40 years.
Ghani received his Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from the Military College of Engineering in 1984 and completed his Master’s in Civil Engineering from the University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore in 1990.
During his military service, he held important positions, including Commander of the Army’s Engineering Corps and Quartermaster General. Under his leadership, several major construction projects were completed. He was commissioned into the Pakistan Army in 1978 and also led an infantry division during the Swat operation.

He served at the General Headquarters (GHQ) as Vice Chief of General Staff and as Corps Commander Karachi.
It is worth mentioning that before Ghani, Lt Gen (Retd) Muzammil Hussain resigned as WAPDA Chairman on 7 May 2022, also citing personal reasons. He had served as Chairman for five years.
Muzammil Hussain was appointed on 24 August 2016 by then-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, replacing Zafar Mahmood. His contract ended on 24 August 2021, but the PTI-led government extended it for another five years.
In his resignation, Muzammil Hussain said that he and his team had achieved significant milestones in the past five years, including the successful progress of several hydro power projects that had faced delays and complications in the past.
