Meta has revealed that WhatsApp will no longer support older Android phones starting from January 1, 2025. Specifically, this will impact devices still running on Android KitKat, which is more than 10 years old. Phones with Android KitKat or older versions won’t be able to run WhatsApp after this date.
This move is part of WhatsApp’s efforts to introduce new, more advanced features that require modern hardware and software. With the addition of AI tools and other updates, older phones simply won’t be able to handle the latest improvements.
Which Phones Will Be Affected?
Here’s a list of some popular devices that will no longer support WhatsApp:
- Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
- Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E (2014)
- HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
- LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
- Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V
If you’re still using one of these older phones, especially as your main device, it’s important to back up your WhatsApp data to a newer phone before the deadline. Otherwise, you risk losing all your chats, photos, and videos after January 1, 2025.
A few months ago, Meta also made a similar announcement for iPhones, stopping support for devices running iOS versions older than 15.1. However, iPhone users will still be able to use WhatsApp until May 2025.
If you’re using an older Android phone, now is the time to think about upgrading to continue using WhatsApp smoothly.
