LAHORE: Justice Aalia Neelum has been nominated as the Chief Justice (CJ) of the Lahore High Court (LHC), marking the first time a woman judge has been selected for this position, according to media report on Tuesday.
As per report, During a meeting led by Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa earlier today, the jurist was unanimously nominated by the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP).
Following the elevation of former LHC CJ Malik Shahzad Ahmad Khan and Justice Shahid Bilal Hassan to the Supreme Court, Justice Neelum ranks third in seniority at the LHC.
Following Justice Shahzad’s elevation, President Asif Ali Zardari appointed Justice Shujaat Ali Khan as the acting CJ for the high court under Article 196.
Meanwhile, Justice Shafi Muhammad Siddiqui was also unanimously nominated for the position of Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court (SHC).
Who is Aalia Neelum?
Designated Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court, Justice Aalia Neelum, was born in 1966. She obtained her law degree from Punjab University Law College in 1995 and holds other law diplomas.
Justice Aalia Neelum was registered as an Advocate in 1996 at the High Court and in 1998 at the Supreme Court.
She continues to practice in constitutional, civil, criminal, terrorism, and other fields.
The nominee was appointed as an ad hoc judge of the Lahore High Court in 2013 and became a permanent judge in 2015. Justice Aalia Neelum also issued SOPs for recording evidence via video link.
