RAWALPINDI: At a press conference in Rawalpindi, Major General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, the Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), emphasized the necessity of holding accountable those responsible for the May 9 riots, stressing that this issue extends beyond the military to encompass the entire nation.

Highlighting the significance of the events surrounding May 9, General Sharif underscored the importance of upholding the nation’s justice system. He noted the widespread public awareness of the incidents and expressed concern over attempts to incite hostility towards the armed forces through misinformation and propaganda.

The spokesperson condemned the selective targeting of military installations and emphasized the need for justice to be served swiftly and impartially. He dismissed claims of ignorance or innocence on the part of those involved, citing the clear evidence of orchestrated attacks and public outcry.

General Sharif pointed to precedents in other countries where swift and decisive action was taken to address similar acts of unrest, emphasizing the importance of accountability to prevent future incidents. He welcomed the idea of a judicial commission to investigate the May 9 riots but stressed the need for a comprehensive inquiry that addresses other instances of civil unrest and violence against state institutions.

He urged for a thorough investigation into the funding and motivations behind such actions, including efforts to incite hatred on social media platforms. General Sharif cautioned against the dangers of allowing impunity for those who undermine state institutions, warning of the potential consequences for national stability and unity.

In conclusion, he praised the resilience of the Pakistani public, emphasizing their rejection of violence and their commitment to upholding the integrity of the nation.
