A deputy superintendent of police (DSP), along with his gunman, was martyred in a militant attack targeting a police vehicle in Lakki Marwat, according to a statement released by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) Police on Saturday.
The incident occurred near the Manjiwala Chowk, resulting in the martyrdom of Lakki Marwat DSP Gul Mohammad Khan and Constable Naseem Gul, with another policeman injured and taken to a hospital.
Following the attack, a sizable police force arrived at the scene and initiated a search operation.
In a separate event on Friday, unidentified armed individuals opened fire on a post-polio campaign assessment team in the Manra area of Birmil tehsil, Lower South Waziristan district, resulting in the martyrdom of a police constable.
The quarterly report from the Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) based in Islamabad highlights the deteriorating security situation in KP and Balochistan, with 92% of fatalities and 86% of attacks recorded in these provinces in the first quarter of 2024.
The report details 432 violence-related fatalities and 370 injuries among civilians, security personnel, and criminals, stemming from 245 incidents of terror attacks and counter-terror operations.
Of the 432 fatalities, 281 were civilians and security forces personnel.
KP and Balochistan collectively accounted for 51% and 41% of the total fatalities in Q1 2024, respectively, indicating heightened unrest in these areas compared to others.
Additionally, 64 incidents of sabotage targeting government, political, private, and security properties were recorded.
There was a notable surge in violence, with fatalities rising to 178 from 91 in the fourth quarter of 2023. Sindh also witnessed a nearly 47% increase in violence, although fatalities remained relatively low.
