ISLAMABAD: President Arif Alvi, in a letter addressed to the interim Prime Minister, Anwaarul Haq Kakar, expressed the PTI’s apprehensions on Wednesday concerning the diminishing of fundamental rights and the need for a fair environment for all political parties in the lead-up to the upcoming general elections.

Earlier this month, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and President Alvi had jointly announced February 8, 2024, as the date for the general elections, which has stirred increased activity within the major political parties’ camps.

The PTI has asserted that it is facing hindrances in carrying out its political activities, and many of its leaders are currently detained due to the violence that occurred in the country on May 9.

The PTI is demanding that the forthcoming elections be conducted in a free, fair, and transparent manner and that an equitable platform should be provided to all political parties in the pre-election process.

In response, PM Kakar has indicated that individuals with affiliations to PTI Chairman Imran Khan, who is presently incarcerated in connection with the cipher case and has been convicted in the Toshakhana case, will be permitted to participate in the upcoming polls.

A statement issued by the President’s Office today conveyed that Alvi “expressed… the PTI’s concerns about the erosion of fundamental rights and the level playing field for all political parties.”

President Dr. Arif Alvi has conveyed to the Care-taker Prime Minister, Mr. Anwar ul Haq Kakar, the concerns of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on the erosion of fundamental rights and level playing field for all political parties.

The president emphasized the “paramount importance” of the caretaker government’s role as a “neutral entity in ensuring a level playing field for all political parties” and forwarded a letter from PTI General Secretary Omar Ayub Khan to the prime minister.
