ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Federal Interior Minister Sarfraz Bugti has emphasized the Army Chief’s unequivocal stance on dealing with individuals involved in smuggling, stating that they will face court-martial proceedings and subsequent imprisonment.

During a press conference held in Islamabad, Sarfraz Bugti underscored the Army’s robust accountability measures in response to the incidents that occurred on May 9. He highlighted that smuggling operations were not limited to the use of camels but also extended to the transportation of illegal goods via trucks, implicating politicians and government officials. Bugti pledged that any relevant findings from ongoing investigations would be disclosed to the public.

Bugti also discussed the government’s month-long efforts to combat smuggling, stressing support for legitimate workers while pledging stringent action against illegal activities such as adulteration of petrol and tampering with fuel quantities at pumps.

The caretaker interior minister revealed that comprehensive data on food requirements had been collected from all provinces, with the intention of curbing the illicit trade of essential goods. He announced the registration of 168 FIRs related to illegal currency movements and noted a convergence in the dollar’s actual value.

Additionally, Bugti disclosed a nationwide campaign against drug trafficking, with an impressive 80% conviction rate in anti-narcotics court cases. He reaffirmed their commitment to ongoing investigations into the Mustang blast, vowing to expose the truth and ensure the eradication of terrorism from the country.

In response to a question, Sarfaraz Bugti clarified that Nawaz Sharif would be treated in accordance with the law upon his return to Pakistan, emphasizing the importance of adherence to legal processes.
