ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has successfully launched its first locally-made Electro-Optical (EO-1) satellite. The launch took place at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in China, with support from Suparco, the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission.

As per report, the EO-1 satellite is designed to collect data and images of the Earth using electro-optical sensors, these sensors detect sunlight and radiation to provide useful information.

Suparco said that the satellite will help Pakistan manage natural resources, respond to disasters, and improve urban planning and farming practices, it will also track deforestation, monitor water resources, and provide updates on natural disasters like floods and earthquakes.

Suparco Chairman Muhammad Yousaf Khan thanked the government for its support and credited the engineers for their hard work. He said the launch shows Pakistan’s focus on using space technology for progress.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called the event a proud moment for Pakistan. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar said it highlights Suparco’s expertise and the government’s commitment to peaceful space exploration.

The satellite launch aligns with Pakistan’s National Space Policy goals. Last year, Pakistan launched a communication satellite, PakSat-MM1, to improve internet and communication services. Suparco is also part of a lunar exploration mission with China, planned for 2028.

China’s Long March-2D rocket, which launched the EO-1 satellite, also carried two other satellites, Tianlu-1 and Blue Carbon 1, into orbit.
