ISLAMABAD: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) opened one underpass of the Serena Interchange Islamabad project to traffic.

The project includes three underpasses: one on Khayaban-i-Suhrwardi and two on Srinagar Highway. The underpass on Khayaban-i-Suhrwardi, near Serena, is now open. It allows traffic from Globe Chowk (Constitution Avenue) to Aabpara. Traffic heading towards Constitution Avenue will continue to use the old route, which is being upgraded.

Entire Project to Finish Soon;

CDA officials said the remaining two underpasses on Srinagar Highway are structurally complete. The entire project is expected to be finished by January 24.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif laid the foundation stone for this Rs4.2 billion project on November 5. It was initially planned to be completed in 60 days but faced delays due to construction challenges.

An official stated, “Despite challenges, we opened the Suhrwardi underpass today. Work on the other two underpasses is in the final stages.”

CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa visited the site and expressed satisfaction with the progress. He directed teams to finish landscaping and lane markings soon.

Future Plans;

The CDA is also planning a new underpass to connect Murree Road with Srinagar Highway. Without this link, traffic from Murree Road must use Kashmir Chowk to reach Srinagar Highway.

A consultant has finalized the initial design, and work will begin soon. This project is part of preparations for the Champion’s Trophy next month, where visiting teams will stay in Islamabad.
