Punjab govt introduces cooperative farming to boost vegetable cultivation

LAHORE: The Punjab government has decided to introduce cooperative farming to increase the cultivation of vegetables, including tomatoes and onions, across the province.

As per report, a project to grow onions and tomatoes without seasons will be launched on 2,000 acres in Punjab, vegetable farmer groups consisting of 5 to 10 farmers will receive subsidies on seeds, fertilizers, drip irrigation, and solarization.

There will be no artificial inflation, as onions and tomatoes are locally available in Punjab for 6 months from off-season cultivation. In Kahrur Pakka, Rahim Yar Khan, Wahari, and Rajanpur, onion cultivation is planned, while in Khushab, Chakwal, Pindi, and Jhelum, off-season tomato cultivation is planned.

Approval was given to start agriculture machinery rental services across Punjab for the convenience of farmers. Tractors, harvesters, and other modern agricultural machinery will be available for rent to farmers on a “No Profit, No Loss” basis.

Similarly, a joint working group has been set up to select more than 67 locations and agricultural machinery.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif ordered the sowing of wheat on government land in a special meeting presided over by Chief Minister Punjab Maryam. The recommendations for “Transforming Punjab Agriculture Culture” were reviewed.

Senior Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb, Information and Culture Minister Zahid Bukhari, Agriculture Minister Ashiq Hussain Kirmani, Chief Secretary Zahid Akhtar Zaman, Principal Secretary Sajid Zafar Dal, Secretary Agriculture, Secretary Finance, Secretary Energy, and other officials were also present.
