ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that the Punjab government has provided relief to electricity consumers with its own resources, while the federal government has not contributed.

Addressing the federal cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated that in recent days, there has been heavy rain across the country, leading to casualties due to flooded rails. The PDMA and provincial governments have made joint efforts to control the situation.

The prime minister noted that inflation is at its lowest level compared to the last three years, having decreased from 38% to 11%. However, challenges remain, and inflation needs to be reduced further. There should be a staff-level agreement with the IMF. Additionally, the revenue target has already been increased to 13 and a half billion.

Shehbaz Sharif mentioned that measures are being taken to reduce losses in the power sector, including the digitization of the FBR. The PSDP was cut by 50 billion, and relief was given to domestic consumers for three months, benefiting 86% of them.

He added that Punjab has provided relief to consumers using 200 to 500 units of electricity by allocating 45 billion rupees from the development fund. The federal government has not contributed to Punjab’s relief efforts; Punjab has given a gift to its people. Other provinces can also provide relief to their residents.

The prime minister remarked that some regrettable statements have been made, and politics should be avoided on the issue of relief.
