ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has granted incumbent Higher Education Commission (HEC) Chairman Dr Mukhtar Ahmed a one-year extension. A summary from the Prime Minister’s Secretariat was sent to the secretary of the education ministry.
The extension was granted after the education ministry submitted a summary. He completed his two-year tenure .
It should be noted, he was appointed as the HEC chairman on July 29, 2022, Dr Ahmed, a renowned educationist, had earlier held the post from 2014 to 2018.
During the PTI government, the term of the HEC chairman was changed from four years to two years by an official order. This change appeared to be aimed at getting rid of the then Chairman HEC, Dr. Tariq Banuri, who was removed before his term ended.
The Ministry of Federal Education supported a two-year extension for Dr. Mukhtar and submitted a summary to the PM Office regarding this matter.
The appointment is for one year, starting from June 30, the Prime Minister’s Secretary, Asad-ur-Rehman Geelani, has informed the secretary of the Establishment Division that the appointment has been approved.
