ISLAMABAD: An accountability court on Monday granted pre-arrest bail to Bushra Bibi, the wife of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and former first lady, in the £190 million reference.
The development follows a decision by a two-member Islamabad High Court (IHC) bench, consisting of Chief Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri, which approved Khan’s bail plea in the case in May.
The former PM Imran Khan, along with Bushra and other PTI leaders, is facing a NAB inquiry concerning a settlement between the PTI government and a property tycoon, which reportedly caused a £190 million loss to the national exchequer.
The couple, however, remains behind bars due to the iddat case and is unlikely to be freed after a district and sessions court rejected their pleas seeking suspension of the sentences in the aforementioned case.
During today’s hearing, the NAB presented three additional witnesses who were cross-examined by the defense lawyers.
So far, statements from 30 witnesses have been recorded in the case, with 27 having undergone cross-examination.
The court then summoned additional witnesses for the next hearing and adjourned the case until July 5.
The accountability watchdog’s counsels also informed the court that the arrest warrant for the former first lady has not yet been issued.
