ISLAMABAD: Senator Shibli Faraz became the leader of the opposition in the Pakistan Senate on Monday.

Imran Khan, the previous prime minister and founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, suggested Faraz for the position, and 21 senators agreed.

This decision followed the rules of the Senate, as stated in a message from the Senate Secretariat.

Faraz has been a senator since 2015. Before that, he was in charge of sharing information for the PTI government. Recently, he was given an important role in the PTI.

Faraz’s new job comes after the Senate didn’t do much for three weeks because 52 senators left on March 12. On April 2, the group in power won 19 seats, and Yusuf Raza Gilani became the Senate chairman without any competition.

During the meeting, the PTI complained, but 41 new senators were still sworn in, joining the Upper House of Parliament. The PTI didn’t participate in the election because they believed it wasn’t done properly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
