TALAMBA: The son of the eminent religious scholar Maulana Tariq Jamil committed suicide at his residence in Talamba, their native town in Punjab, according to the police, following an initial investigation of the incident on Sunday.

As per Multan’s Regional Police Officer (RPO), Captain (Retd) Sohail Chaudhry, “CCTV footage shows Asim Jamil committing suicide.”

RPO Chaudhry believes Asim shot himself in the chest and mentioned that the footage would be sent for forensic analysis.

Chaudhry also revealed that Asim had a history of psychiatric issues and had been on medication for several years. He used a 30-bore pistol to end his life, instructing his domestic help, Imran, to retrieve the firearm.

Providing more details, the police officer mentioned that when Asim aimed the gun at his chest, the domestic help attempted to dissuade him.

“He had a love marriage, but they later separated,” added RPO Chaudhry.

Earlier, the well-known religious scholar posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, to announce his son’s passing, stating: “My son Asim Jamil passed away in Tulamba, Khanewal, Punjab today.”

Chaudhry confirmed, “Asim died from a gunshot wound.” In response to a query, he stated that the police had arrived at the scene and were gathering information about the incident.

The RPO clarified that Asim sustained a gunshot to his chest.

Meanwhile, Punjab Inspector General of Police, Dr. Usman Anwar, has requested a comprehensive report from the Multan RPO concerning the incident.

A spokesperson for the Punjab police noted that the IG has instructed an examination of the circumstances surrounding Asim’s death based on the available evidence and forensic findings. The spokesperson added that the Khanewal District Police Officer and other senior officials have arrived at the scene and collected evidence.
