ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet on Saturday approved the appointment of former Chief Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani to lead an inquiry commission tasked with investigating allegations made by Islamabad High Court (IHC) judges regarding interference by intelligence agencies in judicial matters, as per Private Media Sources.
This decision came following an agreement between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa to address the issue.
On March 26, IHC judges — Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kiyani, Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri, Justice Babar Sattar, Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan, Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir, and Justice Saman Fafat Imtiaz — forwarded a letter to the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC), urging for a judicial convention to address alleged interference by intelligence agencies in judicial affairs.
Responding to the letter, CJP Isa stated on March 28 that any executive meddling in the affairs and judicial processes of judges would not be tolerated, emphasizing this during a meeting with PM Shehbaz at the Supreme Court in Islamabad.
The federal cabinet, chaired by PM Shehbaz, discussed the letter and approved the formation of an investigation commission to look into the allegations outlined in the letter. The meeting, conducted over Zoom with most ministers participating online, also included a five-point agenda.
Previously, the cabinet meeting had been postponed twice due to the prime minister’s busy schedule.
