ISLAMABAD: In a significant boost for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), a prominent figure from Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) legal wing has switched allegiance to join Imran Khan’s party, as reported by Private Media on Sunday.
Advocate Nadeem Shahzad Hashmi, previously serving as the Senior Vice-President of PML-N’s Lawyers Forum, made the move to PTI after a meeting with PTI Sindh President Haleem Adil Sheikh on Saturday.
Sheikh welcomed Hashmi to PTI, commending his decision to leave PML-N led by Shehbaz Sharif and join PTI’s ranks.
The development underscores the growing support for PTI among legal circles, with Sheikh highlighting the role of lawyers in furthering Imran Khan’s ideology, akin to their historical support for Pakistan’s founder.
Additionally, numerous members of Insaf Lawyers Forum (ILF) from Karachi, including President Zahoor Mehsud and several others, were present during the occasion.
This transition in allegiance comes amidst PTI’s efforts to strengthen its ranks, particularly following Khan’s removal via a vote of no confidence and subsequent challenges faced by the party.
Notably, PTI’s leadership boasts prominent legal figures such as Barrister Ali Zafar, Sher Afzal Marwat, Hamid Khan, Salman Akram Raja, and Latif Khosa, reflecting the party’s appeal to legal professionals.
PTI’s strategic inclusion of lawyers in its electoral endeavors has been viewed positively by analysts, given the unity within legal circles and their advocacy for the party’s agenda.
Khurram Sher Zaman, a PTI leader, emphasized the crucial support provided by lawyers during challenging times and highlighted the party’s acknowledgment of their contributions through ticket allocations.
Dr. Tauseef Ahmed Khan noted the formidable support lawyers enjoy from bar councils and associations, suggesting potential challenges for authorities in dealing with legal actions against them, contrasting with the establishment’s treatment of dissenters.
