KARACHI: The Chairman of the Shariah Board Pakistan, Sheikh Al-Hadith Professor Dr Mufti Muhammad Zafar Iqbal Jalali, declared the minimum Sadaqah-e-Fitr or Fitrana and Fidya for health-related exemptions from fasting during Ramadan this year, set at Rs300 per person, approximately equal to two kilograms of wheat flour.
Dr Jalali underscored the significance of charitable giving, urging philanthropists and those with means to contribute Fitrana and Fidya as per their financial capability. The set values are Rs600 for oats, Rs2,400 for dates, and Rs4,400 for raisins.
Moreover, he delineated the Fidya rates for fasting throughout Ramadan, ranging from Rs9,000 for wheat flour to Rs132,000 for raisins, emphasizing that Fidya is designated for individuals with chronic illnesses or no possibility of recovery from inability to fast.
Dr Jalali clarified that Fidya cannot substitute for fasting and is meant for those who are chronically ill or unable to fast without the prospect of recovery. Travelers and individuals temporarily unable to fast are obligated to make up for missed fasts.
The Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Security fixed the minimum Zakat amount at Rs135,179 for this year. The ministry announced the Zakat Nisab for 2024, applying to savings accounts/profit and loss sharing (PLS) accounts with a balance of Rs135,179 or more, requiring customers meeting the criteria to pay 2.5% Zakat on their total account balance.
