ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) announced on Thursday that all successful candidates who have won two or more seats in the general elections must retain only one seat.
According to Article 223(3) of the Constitution, before assuming a seat in any assembly, the winning candidate or their authorized representative must resign from all seats except one.
The procedure for withdrawing from additional seats can be completed by submitting a request to the chief election commissioner, the Election Commission of Pakistan Secretariat in Islamabad, or the offices of the Provincial Election Commissioners in Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan, as confirmed by the oath commissioner.
Failure to do so within 30 days, as outlined in Article 223(2), will result in all seats being considered vacant except for the last seat on which the candidate was declared successful.
In related news, the Election Commission dismissed petitions primarily filed by PTI-supported candidates contesting the elections in NA-47 and NA-48. Shoaib Shaheen ran in NA-47, while Muhammad Ali Bokhari contested NA-48.
