ISLAMABAD: Nepra increased electricity prices by Rs3.07 per unit for all companies that distribute power.

This change will show up on people’s bills in December 2023, based on how much electricity they used in October 2023.

They said the reason for the price hike was because the cost of fuel went up. But not everyone will be affected – people in Karachi who use Karachi-Electric, electric vehicle charging stations, and those who are considered low-income consumers won’t have to pay more, according to the notice.

Pakistan is trying to deal with its debt problems, and to get money from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), they have to follow some rules, including increasing power and gas prices.

Nepra found out that some companies, including Karachi-Electric, were charging too much from their customers. Nepra wants to take legal action against these companies for breaking the rules.

There were many complaints from people all over Pakistan saying they got bills that were too high or wrong during July and August. Nepra had meetings about this and found cases where the meter readings were not clear or not done properly. Some customers were charged too much because the readings were taken after more than 30 days, changing their bill category from a lower price to a higher one.
