The Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation (PMDC) project manager lost his life in an improvised explosive device (IED) explosion that targeted his vehicle in Quetta on Sunday, as reported by the police.
Jawad Tariq, the Senior Superintendent of Police (Operations) in Quetta, confirmed the incident to the media and identified the deceased individual as Shabat Mirza.
Tariq mentioned that the PMDC official was en route to the Sor Range with his driver, Muhammad Zakir, when the explosion occurred. “Mirza tragically passed away on the scene, while his driver suffered severe injuries.”
SSP Tariq stated that Zakir was promptly transported to the Quetta Civil Hospital Trauma Centre.
“In the initial inquiry, it appears that explosives were planted along the roadside,” said the police official, who also noted that the Counter Terrorism Department had sealed off the blast site and initiated the process of gathering evidence.
Tariq explained that the Sor Range is situated in a hilly area and mentioned that CTD personnel were interviewing local residents for additional information.
This incident comes amidst a recent surge in terrorist activities in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Just last month, a devastating suicide bombing during a procession celebrating the birth of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) on 12 Rabiul Awwal in Mastung resulted in the loss of at least 59 lives.
Following this horrific attack, the Balochistan government had declared an “all-out war” against terrorists in the province.
